Chapter 11
- Chapter
11 – How can we use Shared Thinking to “kill two birds with one stone” –
improve classroom management and increase student learning? Give an example of how you have seen
Shared Thinking both improve student behaviors and increase their levels
of learning at the same time.
Case Study 1
Case Study
Jimmy is a disruptive 2nd
grader. He challenges everything the
teacher does or says. With him every
small primary issue escalates into several major and secondary issue. The teacher tries to be assertive and stern
with telling Jimmy to not talk during class at all and that he needs to stay in
at recess. The teacher doesn’t always
follow-through with the threats of having him stay in at recess because the
teacher is stressed and needs a break from him.
The teacher is at a point now where she ignores his good and bad
behavior and does not give Jimmy any attention.
How could the teacher use the Love and Logic process to improve the
situation?
Case Study 2
Case Study
Johnny is a 5th grader
in Mr. Rodriquez’ classroom. Johnny
constantly disrupts the class by moving around the room, sharpening his pencil
and digging in his desk. When Mr.
Rodriquez attempts to discipline Johnny, Johnny becomes argumentative and
engages Mr. Rodriquez in a power struggle.
During science Johnny began to sharpen his pencil when Mr. Rodriquez was
discussing safety precautions to the class. When Mr. Rodriquez asked Johnny to
sit down Johnny refused and began arguing with Mr. Rodriquez, further
disrupting the class. What could Mr. Rodriquez say based on the Love and Logic
technique to meet Johnny’s needs and still maintain control of the
classroom.
