  1. Chapter 1 discusses holding students to a higher standard of behavior. I think it is crucial to establish a classroom environment that is respectful of everyone from the first day of school. I want my students to feel comfortable and loved. I like the “wait and cool down” questioning technique. The example with the principal at the beginning of the chapter was hilarious. I think it is a method that seems like common sense, but can be hard to remember in the heat of things. It is also more difficult to do since my students are only in my room for one class a day.

The first grade study group tries to hold the entire class to a higher standard of behavior by focusing on positive behaviors. We try to keep the atmosphere in the classroom positive and comfortable by offering learning and behavior choices to the students within their day. We try to stay away from power struggles, and try not to let the misbehaving students control the environment, or lesson.
